EYFS Learning Goals and National Curriculum Expectations

The Early Learning Goals and Development Matters are covered in nursery and reception. The most relevant statements for history are understanding the world and past and present. The learning which takes place builds the foundations for our young historians so that as they move into Key Stage 1 they are ready to develop their knowledge, understanding and enquiry skills.

Our budding historians will:

• Begin to make sense of their own life-story and family’s history.

• Comment on images of familiar situations in the past.

• Compare and contrast characters from stories, including figures from the past.

• Talk about the lives of people around them and their roles in society.

• Know some similarities and differences between things in the past and now, drawing on their experiences and what has been read in class.

• Understand the past through settings, characters and events encountered in books read in class and storytelling.
