Modern Foreign Languages

At St Antony's Primary School we are committed to providing all Key Stage 2 children with the opportunity to learn a foreign language – French or Spanish.

We recognise that teaching should provide an appropriate balance of spoken and written language and should lay the foundations for further foreign language teaching at Key Stage 3.

We aim to enable pupils to understand and communicate ideas, facts and feelings in speech and writing, focused on familiar and everyday routines.  We believe that studying another language provides our pupils with an awareness and insight into other countries and their cultures.

We are committed to equipping our children for the modern, diverse world they inhabit. We want to raise responsible and resilient citizens, who will experience the wonders of travel and education outside of the United Kingdom. We want them to be able to converse and interact with the many people they will discover as they make their way through life.

In 2018-19, Year 5 & 6 will continue to learn French in order to deepen their knowledge and understanding of the curriculum and build on the language skills they have developed in Lower Key Stage 2.

Following consultation with pupils and parents, we are delighted to be able to offer Spanish lessons to our Year   3 & 4 children. The children are eager to learn Spanish - the second most widely-spoken language in the world - as many of them holiday in Spain, The Balearic Islands and The Canaries, where Spanish is the mother-tongue.

Building on the strengths of the staff in our school and taking into consideration the changing economic climate; where trade with South America will likely be a big part of our children's future - we are keen to equip them with language skills for the modern world.
