What to expect in Year 3...

Please ensure that reading books are in school each day as the children may be heard reading individually. We encourage 20-30 minutes of reading each day. Books will be changed EVERY DAY if your child's reading record has been signed. In addition to individual reading,  we also small group guided reading daily and a more in depth reading lesson once a week to ensure the children are refining their reading skills.

English/ Maths/Topic

Each half-term, children will work on a themed project at home. They are encouraged to be creative and take ownership of their learning so that they can deepen their knowledge and understanding of a specific aspect of our in-class learning. Children will then present their work to the class as a speaking and listening activity.

Grammar and Mathematics homework is linked to the concepts we have been studying in class and is sent home each Friday, to be returned the following Friday.

In addition to the topic grid the children will also be given a list of eight spellings to learn in preparation for a spelling test every Monday.

There will also be a Learning By Questions Quiz set and reset daily over the weekend. Children have their own passcodes and then simply type in the code shared to access the quiz.

We also encourage the children to use their individual log-ins to access Times Tables Rockstars and Oxford Owl (log in: mrshansen password:Year3) Click on the links below to go straight to the webpage.

This is an extremely exciting year for many of the children in Year 3 as some of them will be participating in the Sacramental Programme, an opportunity in which they will receive two of the Sacraments: Reconciliation and Holy Communion. Over the year, we will be working together to prepare the children for the receiving of these Sacraments. This will include; attending meetings in school and church, learning in school, learning at home and attending masses at Church. Please note: if you have any other children who have not completed this and wish to, they may also participate in this wonderful journey. More information about the start of the programme to follow.

Our Curriculum

We have made some exciting changes to our curriculum this year to ensure it is knowledge rich. To help your child retain the facts, uploaded are some subject specific knowledge organisers. They are a summary of the key facts and essential knowledge needed to be known for a particular unit of work in a subject. We are currently working on Cycle A.

Year 3 have P.E on a Thursday with Mr Close and Mr Kelk from Wigan Warriors. Due to the current Covid situation we ask that children come to school in their kits. This consists of: black shorts/jogging pants, black pumps/trainers and a t shirt/hoodie in their house colour.

Our focus this half term has been rugby

Children in Year 3 take part in weekly swimming lessons. The focus is on developing their confidence in the water and also their water safety skills. Swimming takes place on a Tuesday afternoon so please ensure that your child has his/her swimming kit with them each week as well as a swimming cap. Children can also come in their PE kits on Tuesday!
